It's tough in the early part of the game, usually randomly adding yourself to someone will let them know you're new and they definitely won't take you. However, there's tons of good guilds that look for new people, they usually recruit in the early part of the game. Pick one and join it. If you don't like it, leave and find another. A good guild in this game goes a long way towards making it fun to play.

This is the negative side of heros/henchmen, killing pugs slowly. I think they should be bared from primary quests and missions, or only allowed in a couple cases, or only for primary/not for everything else.

I think maybe you are right. I found for a multi play game there is not much multi playing going on.
But I think Guild wars is a very good game and is a lot of fun to play, so no complaints here.

Don't be shy, shout what you want in towns/outposts (but not in full caps, full caps = insta-noob), for ages I wondered why no-one would speak to me, you kinda have to force your way in there in GW's. Like someone else said it's the P window to shout requests etc.

Best bet is to try and join a decent guild early on, theres always guilds recruiting at lower level areas, hope you get a good 1

Problem is, the good ones aren't the ones with someone sitting in Ascalon, Lion's Arch, Shing Jea, Kaineng Center or Kamadan (hmm, annoying that NF doesn't have a second city where people gather, like the other two do :P) spamming Local...

As for Heroes killing PUGs (in an earlier post), well, groups really aren't needed for most of the game and, even pre-Heroes, never really were. It's quite easy to think of GW as a traditional single-player computer/console RPG (and it stands up very well on that front), with some mostly optional multiplayer aspects. Really, except for two quests in Pre-Searing Ascalon, and the transition PvP at the end of it (which will skip if no one else goes through at the same time), there's no grouping with other humans that's mandatory - though there's places where you don't really want to have to rely on H/H AI: the final 2-3 missions in each campaign/EotN, Vizunah Square, Gyala Hatchery/Eternal Grove(?), Aurora Glade, just off the top of my head....

I know what you mean ogre but there are a few decent ones that recruit in those places but also many many bad ones that do nothing but spam, the OP will just have to try a few and hopefully find one that fits

I always found the best guild... and subsequently the best recruits through playing the game and either being helped or offering help ad hoc... that way you build up a bit of a friendship and when/if you join or they join the guild it's much more long term and loyal rather than hoping that random "spam" recruits stay lol....

So what I'm saying is to go out try and get into some groups and meet and talk with people, you'll soon find some very nice people about

Dawndisciple, yeah l found things pretty much the same, l've just returned after about a 3 year break.

Now it feels like a single player game, not many parties, nobody chats, maybe the missions have been made easier, or the henchies better, because as l remember it many missions could not be completed with henchies, now l just do everything with henchies.

There's also loads of new stuff, and builds l don't fully understand, l still have my original Ranger and l don't really want to part with her.

The general advice you'll get here is, don't expect to get invited to parties, start your own party, get in a guild, nobody "pugs" anymore (If l knew what that meant), the game is getting old, wait for GW2, etc, etc.

Anyway it's still a good game, l guess it is getting old but there's still loads to do.

Since its such an old game many players have finished the pve part of the game often with multiple characters, they are then concentrating on other achievements.

Gaining titles raising cash to buy stuff etc but there are still players like yourself new to the game its finding them amongst the crowd that is a problem.

It was a lot easier a year or so back since almost every town had players just there to do the game missions.

Its not a big problem with friends or a guild or even henchmen as long as your having fun why worry.
GW 2 will come along and we will all be desperate for parties again.
